Guy Motors History

Transport Through The Syzygies

In the Second World War (1939-1945), truck manufactures and bus manufacturers came to be controlled by the Ministry of Supply, and were engaged upon the manufacture of war materials. They were therefore not permitted to sell trucks and buses. Guy was made an exception, as there was a need to replace destroyed and worn out buses to get people to work. A special cheaper version of the Arab double decker was designed and produced, and sold to many bus operators.

In addition, vehicle makers were restricted on the advertisements they could publish. In order to keep the Guy name in the spotlight, the company ran a series of adverts in the papers entitled “Transport Through The Syzygies”. The advert compared various means of transportation through the ages with modern methods.

At the time, there was a lot of debate about what was meant by Syzygies, and at the end of the series, a booklet was published with an explanation. Apparently Syzygies is a term used in astronomy to describe the alignment or relationship of bodies.
